Home Depot's stock takes a hit as the home improvement giant reveals strategic closures across Middle Tennessee.

The Retail Reset

Market watchers saw HD shares slide after the company confirmed shutdown plans for multiple Tennessee locations. The move signals a broader repositioning in the competitive home improvement landscape.

Wall Street's reaction was immediate and brutal—proving once again that traditional retail stocks move with all the grace of a dropped hammer.

Numbers don't lie, and today's trading action shows investors voting with their wallets. The closure strategy represents another chapter in the ongoing evolution of brick-and-mortar retail—where sometimes the smartest move is knowing when to pack up the tools and move on.

Home Depot’s subsidiary and distributor HD Supply revealed that it was shutting down the plant NEAR La Vergne before January 9, 2026. This in turn will mean the layoff of 108 employees. This is a substantial blow to the area, which has already seen several rounds of layoffs from other businesses over the course of 2025.

An HD Supply representative noted, “HD Supply continues to improve its leading maintenance, repair and operations distribution business. As part of that journey, we’ve made several strategic decisions around our network strategy and have made the decision to consolidate our La Vergne Distribution Center into another facility in La Vergne.”

What Is It About Home Depot and Organized Theft Rings?

It was not so long ago that an organized theft ring targeting Home Depot locations was broken up, and as it turns out, another may have been in the making out in Connecticut. Three suspects walked in late Sunday afternoon, and instead of having a look around or picking up some supplies, they grabbed six nailers worth a combined total of about $1,904.

It turns out Home Depot nailers are a hot item in Connecticut, as police believe that the trio was involved in a similar theft of Home Depot nailers from both Windham and Waterford. Amazingly, the three suspects involved were spotted getting into a car with Illinois registration plates, leading one to wonder if there were not Home Depot locations to steal from in Illinois instead.

Is Home Depot a Good Long-Term Buy?

Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Strong Buy consensus rating on HD stock based on 19 Buys and six Holds assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. After a 1.72% loss in its share price over the past year, the average HD price target of $446.30 per share implies 16.05% upside potential.
