Chaskin Highlights Celo’s Transition to Ethereum L2

Jason Chaskin, a key figure at the Ethereum Foundation, pointed to Celo’s recent transition as a successful example. Celo, a blockchain focused on mobile and financial inclusivity, shifted to Ethereum’s Layer-2, reducing inflation and improving efficiency.

The integration allowed Celo to streamline its code, reduce block times, and adopt Ethereum’s secure environment. Chaskin believes that Ethereum’s robust developer community is a significant advantage for projects looking for growth and innovation. By leveraging Ethereum’s infrastructure, Layer-1s like Celo can enhance scalability while preserving the security that Ethereum offers.

The Ethereum Foundation aims to foster more collaborations like Celo’s to expand its ecosystem. According to Chaskin, as Ethereum strengthens its network and technology, other Layer-1 networks may face increasing pressure to adopt Ethereum’s infrastructure for scalability. This strategy might be more efficient than competing with Ethereum directly. Buterin Advocates for Simplified Layer-2 Designs

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, recently expanded on Chaskin’s statements by discussing the future of Layer-2 networks. Buterin emphasized that building a Layer-2 solution should not require excessive complexity.

Instead, Layer-2 networks can achieve success by focusing on two essential functions: the sequencer and the prover. The sequencer controls the order of transactions, while the prover ensures that transactions are valid and properly executed. This minimalist approach removes the need for rebuilding complex infrastructure, allowing projects to focus on the most essential elements of a Layer-2 solution.

Buterin believes that this strategy offers a more efficient path for blockchain development. By simplifying Layer-2 designs, networks can achieve “trust minimization and efficiency,” two goals that have eluded many enterprise blockchain solutions in the past.

He further explained that this approach WOULD lead to better scalability and lower operational costs without compromising on security. As a result, Ethereum’s Layer-2 ecosystem is growing, with networks now able to rely on Ethereum’s established protocol for core functions while reducing the burden on their own systems.

The Ethereum Foundation is also pushing forward with the integration of zero-knowledge Ethereum VIRTUAL Machines (zkEVM), which will further reduce computational overhead for validators. With zkEVM, Ethereum’s validators will only need to check zero-knowledge proofs rather than re-running transaction blocks. This new integration promises to improve scalability, enhancing Ethereum’s appeal as a Layer-2 platform for networks that prioritize minimalism and security.
