Ethereum is another step closer to the next big network upgrade, Fusaka, now scheduled for the mainnet launch in early November, just before Devconnect.

After two successive weeks of incident-free running on Devnet-2, developers confirmed the release of Devnet-3 scheduled for July 23. This is the final step before the upgrade is subjected to public testing.

In a primary developer call held on July 17 (ACDE #216), the group made a significant decision. They voted for the removal of EIP-7907 from Fusaka.

This was a proposal for increasing the maximum size for a smart contract beyond 24 KB and was controversial due to the increase in tech complexity and the potential delay in deadlines.

Time is short, and other features are already in testing, so the group decided it wasn’t worth taking the chance to alter one thing. Everything is now focused on making Fusaka stable and ready at launch time.

EIP-7907 Gets Pushed to Future Upgrade

The debate around EIP-7907 had been heating up for weeks. Some developers said the change was simple and easy to implement. Others pointed out that adding it so late could create new problems.

The Besu team called for a freeze on any more spec changes, while Arbitrum suggested a smaller increase in code size instead.

In the end, everyone agreed to delay EIP-7907 and revisit it in a later upgrade, now nicknamed Glamsterdam. That decision cleared the way for the teams to lock in Fusaka’s final structure and MOVE forward without further delays.

Several bugs from earlier testing rounds are still being resolved. These include issues like validator syncing delays in Lustre and Teku, polling problems, metadata errors, and node crashes reported by multiple clients. Fixing these is the current priority before anything new is added.

Ethereum Preps for Mainnet Fork with Devnet-3 and Holesky Stress Tests

With EIP-7907 out of the picture, developers are fully focused on testing and hitting their timeline. Devnet-3 kicks off on July 23. After that, there will be two public testnets, along with early-stage bug bounty programs to catch any major problems.

The Holesky testnet will be used for final stress testing. A 30+30 day schedule is in place, with 30 days between the client releases and the mainnet fork and another 30 for wider testing. The aim is to release clients by the end of August or early September so that everything is ready before the November launch window.

Fusaka is shaping up to be a critical step in Ethereum’s roadmap. By keeping things focused and avoiding unnecessary risks, developers are working to deliver a smooth and stable upgrade in the months ahead.
