NEAR Extends Rally as AI Agent Narrative Shifts From Story to Trading

TL;DR
·NEAR rose nearly 16% in the past 24 hours to around $2.82, testing the upper bound of its range since this summer.
·NEAR futures open interest climbed to about $656 million, near yearly highs, indicating new leveraged money rather than just short covering.
·More than a traditional Layer 1 story, the market is increasingly pricing NEAR as trading and settlement infrastructure for AI agents; Grayscale's NEAR ETF filing and T. Rowe Price's crypto ETP reinforce this narrative.
·NEAR Intents has processed over 19 million transactions and $14 billion in volume across 35 blockchains, expanding to privacy assets like Zcash.
·However, NEAR's short-term RSI has risen to about 71, with price near the key $3 resistance. The article also notes it is hard to attribute September's move to a single clear protocol catalyst, with momentum trading still playing a significant role.

NEAR is returning to the market's spotlight.

On Sept. 17, NEAR Protocol's token price rose to around $2.82, up nearly 16% in 24 hours, approaching the upper bound of its range since June. At the same time, NEAR futures open interest continues to climb, while ecosystem total value locked and spot trading volume are also rebounding.

But more important than the green candle itself is how the market is reinterpreting NEAR: it is trying to shift from an ordinary Layer 1 to cross-chain trading and settlement infrastructure for AI agents.

This is also what ETHNews sees as the most important medium-term logic behind the current rally.

AI narrative moves from story to capital pricing

Over the past year, NEAR has steadily strengthened its ties to AI.

The project has publicly positioned itself as an AI-focused blockchain, and its roadmap includes combining AI with Intents, user-owned AI, and developing NEAR Intents into key on-chain trading infrastructure.

NEAR co-founder Illia Polosukhin has repeatedly stressed that privacy could become a critical infrastructure in the AI agent economy: if autonomous agents need to hold data, execute trades, and perform cross-chain operations on behalf of users, then "who owns the data and how agents securely access it" becomes a core question.

This narrative has gradually entered traditional capital's view this year.

In January 2026, Grayscale filed to convert the Grayscale NEAR Trust into a spot ETF; in July, T. Rowe Price launched an actively managed multi-token spot crypto ETP that includes NEAR.

These events do not mean institutional products directly drove NEAR's rally, but they offer a new angle: NEAR's AI infrastructure narrative is moving from a crypto-native project story into asset allocation frameworks.

Intents is becoming NEAR's most important fundamental validation

Compared with the relatively abstract "AI blockchain" label, NEAR's most convincing product may be NEAR Intents.

Traditional cross-chain trading requires users to handle wallets, gas, bridges, and operations across networks, while Intents flips the process: users only express the final outcome they want, and the underlying protocol finds and executes the path.

For example, a user can simply state "swap $200 worth of Bitcoin for a token on Solana," and the protocol completes order matching and execution through infrastructure like relayers.

This model is especially suited for AI agents.

If agents need to autonomously complete asset swaps, payments, or cross-chain settlement, they are not suited to clicking wallets, switching networks, and calculating gas like human users; they need a trading interface that only declares the goal and lets the underlying layer execute automatically.

Data shows Intents has already achieved meaningful usage.

Before integrating with Brave Wallet, NEAR Intents processed over 19 million swaps and $14 billion in volume across 35 blockchains.

Privacy assets are becoming a notable growth area. NEAR Intents already supports direct cross-chain swaps of over 100 tokens into Zcash (ZEC); this week, Intents officially launched Hydration, further enabling cross-chain swaps between ZEC and NEAR.

This means NEAR is connecting two hot market narratives: AI agents on one side, and renewed attention on privacy assets on the other.

Capital is entering, but $3 remains the key level

On the price front, this NEAR rally is not just about spot price.

NEAR futures open interest has risen to about $656 million, near the highest level since 2026, and open interest is growing in tandem with price.

Typically, when price and open interest rise together, it signals new positions and leveraged money, not simple short covering. This can reinforce the trend, but it also means a sharp reversal could amplify volatility through liquidations.

NEAR daily trading volume has also climbed to about $820 million, well above this summer's sluggish levels; meanwhile, NEAR's on-chain DeFi total value locked rose nearly 15% in a single day to about $150 million.

Technically, NEAR has reclaimed its 20-day, 50-day, and 200-day moving averages, forming a bullish alignment with shorter-term averages above longer-term ones.

But short-term risks are also rising.

NEAR's 14-day RSI has climbed to about 71, entering traditionally overbought territory. Over the past few months, NEAR has mostly traded between $1.60 and $2.40, and it is now approaching the previous resistance zone of $2.85 to $3.

Therefore, the original article argues that what really matters is not whether NEAR can briefly break above $3, but whether it can hold that level on a weekly basis. If $3 flips from resistance to support, it could signal a structural change in the prior range.

Notably, the author leaves an important caveat: at least some market institutions, after reviewing September's NEAR price action, have not found a single clear, verifiable protocol catalyst that fully explains the rally.

In other words, AI, Intents, and institutional products can explain why NEAR is back on capital's radar, but not necessarily the entire short-term surge.

Going forward, three indicators are worth watching: whether NEAR can hold near $3, whether Intents volume continues to grow, and whether ETF and ETP products see real inflows.

If these fundamentals keep improving, the market's pricing logic for NEAR may shift further from "AI concept token" to "trading infrastructure for the AI agent era"; if fundamentals fail to catch up with price, the current rally may still be largely a momentum move driven by narrative and leverage.
