Cathie Wood: Starship Launches Could Generate $10T; Musk: Not Impossible

The commercial imagination surrounding SpaceX's Starship is being further amplified. ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood (known as "Wood Sister") predicts that each Starship launch could bring in about $1 billion in annual revenue, and if calculated based on Musk's proposed annual launch target, by 2030 Starship's annual revenue could even reach $10 trillion.

This prediction quickly drew market attention. Musk himself responded to Wood's related post on social platform X, using just three words: "It's not impossible," adding fuel to the discussion around this highly controversial revenue forecast.

Wood's assessment is largely based on Musk's aggressive targets for Starship launch frequency. Previously, Musk stated on X that SpaceX's goal is to achieve more than 30 Starship launches per day by 2030, with an annual launch rate of about 10,000, adding that compared to airplane flights, this is still a very small number.

Wood further linked this launch capability to Starlink's commercialization potential. ARK Invest data shows that Starlink's cumulative in-orbit bandwidth has been growing in recent years, and SpaceX's next-generation V3 satellites have higher per-satellite bandwidth. Combined with Starship's far greater payload capacity than existing rockets, this is expected to significantly increase the network capacity deployed per launch, thereby expanding Starlink's service capabilities and revenue potential.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is about to begin deploying V3 satellites, and Starship's commercial capability will soon face real-world validation. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen said that Starship's 14th flight will carry production V3 satellites and will be Starship's "first revenue-generating flight." This means that whether Starship can transition from high-frequency testing to sustainable commercial launches will begin to be validated with actual revenue data.

 

From Starlink Bandwidth to $1 Billion Revenue per Launch

Wood's prediction stems from an analytical framework by Sam Korus, ARK Invest's Director of Strategy and Research. Based on data from 2023 to 2025, Korus calculated that Starlink's cumulative in-orbit bandwidth reached 190, 335, and 606 Tbps respectively, corresponding to communication revenues of $3.9 billion, $7.6 billion, and $11.4 billion.

From this, the annual revenue per Tbps of bandwidth is approximately $21 million, $23 million, and $19 million respectively. Korus used the latest figure of $19 million as revenue per Tbps, then multiplied it by the approximately 61 Tbps of bandwidth capacity that a single Starship launch can deploy, arriving at the conclusion that "each Starship launch brings about $1 billion in annual revenue."

The core of this calculation lies in the capacity of V3 satellites. SpaceX disclosed that each V3 satellite is designed for 1 Tbps of downlink bandwidth, and a single Starship can deploy up to about 60 V3 satellites, corresponding to over 60 Tbps of new bandwidth, with overall bandwidth throughput more than 20 times that of a Falcon 9 launch.

Korus also pointed out that as Starlink's bandwidth supply continues to expand, revenue per Tbps may gradually decline, meaning the $1 billion figure is not a fixed revenue level. However, even if per-unit bandwidth revenue declines, the larger scale of satellite deployment could still drive continued growth in Starlink's communication revenue.

 

Can High-Frequency Starship Launches Support $10 Trillion in Revenue?

Building on Korus's calculations, Wood further linked the revenue potential per launch to Musk's long-term launch targets. She stated on X that Musk plans 10,000 Starship launches per year by 2030, and based on that, Starship's annual revenue could reach $10 trillion.

This figure differs significantly from Musk's previously stated revenue targets. In June this year, Musk said SpaceX "might" achieve about $1 trillion in revenue by 2030; the company's 2025 revenue was $18.67 billion. Therefore, $10 trillion is currently an external extrapolation based on launch frequency and bandwidth monetization capability, not official SpaceX guidance.

However, this revenue logic is entering a phase of real-world validation. Musk confirmed on Tuesday that SpaceX will begin deploying the next-generation Starlink V3 constellation this month, stating that its ultimate bandwidth will exceed that of the existing network of about 11,000 satellites by more than 100 times. SpaceX currently plans to execute Starship's 14th flight mission on September 22, pending regulatory approval.

To achieve 10,000 launches per year, Starship's own manufacturing capability is also a key constraint. Musk recently discussed the Raptor 3 engine. He said he would advise startups not to attempt manufacturing it because its internal structure is extremely complex and can only be produced with highly modified metal 3D printing technology.

More importantly, the 14th flight will carry production V3 satellites. SpaceX CFO Bret Johnsen previously stated that this will be Starship's "first revenue-generating flight." As V3 deployment begins, Starship's launch frequency, Starlink capacity increments, and per-launch revenue conversion capability will transition from paper calculations to real-world validation.
