Dow Jones Wavers as U.S.-China Schedule Trade Talks

Markets hold their breath as economic superpowers prepare to negotiate.

Trading floors edge toward uncertainty—another round of geopolitical poker begins.

Wall Street watches, hesitates, recalibrates. Nobody’s placing big bets just yet.

Classic finance move: talk a lot, change little, charge commissions either way.

The U.S. and China are set to meet between September 14-17 for their fourth round of in-person trade talks in Madrid, Spain, according to a statement from China’s Commerce Ministry. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will represent the U.S. and negotiate with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and other senior officials.

U.S.-China to Discuss Tariffs and TikTok

The two sides are set to “discuss key national security, economic and trade issues of mutual interest, including TikTok and cooperating on money-laundering networks that threaten both the United States and China,” said the Treasury.

Previous meetings between the two sides have resulted in a mutual tariff rate drop, China easing rare earth export controls, and a tariff grace period extension from the U.S. The U.S. tariff on imported Chinese goods currently stands at about 55%.
