Sensex, Nifty 50 extend early gains as Reliance,Ā Tata Motors lead rally

Indian markets kick off the week with bullish momentum as heavyweight stocks charge ahead.

Reliance and Tata Motors spearhead gains—because nothing says 'market confidence' like fossil fuels and legacy automakers in 2025.

The Sensex and Nifty 50 shrug off global uncertainty, proving once again that domestic liquidity can paper over any cracks. Meanwhile, retail investors cheer—until the next correction hits.

Top gainers & losers

Shares of Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Auto, Adani Ports and Hero Motocorp led the gainers of Nifty 50, while Grasim, Bajaj Finserv, Hindalco, BEL and JSW Steel traded as the major laggards.

Out of 2,912 stocks traded on the National Stock Exchanges, advances outpaced declines with 1,904 shares against 921 in the red, while 87 remained unchanged.

Market breadth was upbeat as 65 stocks (including Aditya Birla Capital, Choice International, Cartrade Tech, HDFC AMC, Hyundai, Maruti, Paytm and Indian BankĀ ) scaled to hit 52-week highs compared to 34 hitting their lows. Meanwhile, 84 shares featuring NIBE and BGR Energy were locked in the upper circuit, whereas 20 hit the lower circuit.

In addition, textile stocks soared after the government temporarily scrapped cotton import duties.

Midcap & smallcap movers today

Of the midcap segment, Ola Electric, Tube Investments, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Bandhan Bank and Astral scaled 3-8 per cent higher, while BDL, Kalyan Jewellers, Glenmak, M&M Financial and Solar Industries depreciated 2-3 per cent.

Under the smallcap basket, Devyani International, Reliance Power, Welspun Living, IIFL and PNB Housing soared 4-8 per cent. Neuland Lab, Data Patterns, Sagility, CreditAccess and Shyam Metalics dropped 1-3 per cent.

On the BSE, KIOCL, SJS Enterprises and Garware HI-Tech Films rallied 9-14 per cent. On the flip side were Bajaj Holding, India Glycols, Sharda Crop and Cholamandalam Financial Holdings falling over 3 per cent.
