KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Boeing has reportedly started working on a single-aisle aircraft that could eventually succeed the 737 Max, as the plane maker looks to regain business lost to rival Airbus.

Boeing (BA) has reportedly started work on a next-generation single-aisle aircraft that could succeed the 737 Max, as the plane Maker looks to regain business lost to rival Airbus after a spate of quality problems.
The 737 Max, the latest generation of the 737 family of narrow-body jets, is the plane maker's best-selling jet. According to The Wall Street Journal, CEO Kelly Ortberg met with executives from the U.K.’s Rolls-Royce earlier this year to discuss a new engine for the aircraft. The report, which cited people familiar with the matter, said the company believes "a cutting-edge plane design could power its business for the next few decades.”
"Our teams continue to be focused on our recovery plan," a company spokesperson said. " At the same time, as we have done over the decades, our team evaluates the market, advances key technologies, and improves our financial performance, so that we will be ready when the time is right to MOVE forward with a new product.”
Why This News Is Significant
Boeing, a Dow component, is under pressure to regain business lost to European rival Airbus after crashes involving the 737 Max. A replacement for the single-aisle jet could help restore Boeing's reputation and provide an added catalyst for the company's shares, which are up by more than a fifth this year.
The report also said a deal with Rolls-Royce WOULD mark a departure for Boeing, which has used engines from a joint venture between GE Aerospace (GE) and France's Safran for the last four decades to power its 737 narrow-body planes. The Federal Aviation Administration would have to approve the new plane, the report said.
The 737 Max Has Had a Troubled History Since Its 2017 Launch
The 737 Max has faced issues since its launch in 2017, including a series of accidents that led to its grounding for a year in 2019. The FAA put a cap on production of the jets after a mid-air blowout of a door panel on an Alaska Airlines (ALK) 737 Max flight in January 2024.
This year has been better. The FAA is easing restrictions it has placed over aircraft deliveries, signaling that it is seeing progress in the company’s quality-improvement efforts under Ortberg.
Boeing has meanwhile logged orders for its 787 Dreamliners from Uzbekistan Airways and Turkish Airlines in the past week. Unlike the single-aisle 737, which is mainly used for short- to medium-range flights, the 787 Dreamliner is a twin-aisle wide-body jet designed for long-haul international travel.
Boeing shares have risen about 20% this year. They are down more than 1% in recent trading. Read Investopedia's roundup of today's trading here.
