Pencil Finance Disrupts Student Debt: On-Chain Capital Goes Live

Blockchain meets textbooks—Pencil Finance just flipped the script on student loans.

No more begging banks for mercy. Their new on-chain capital platform cuts out the middleman, putting loan power back in students' hands. Finally, a DeFi solution that doesn't require a PhD to understand.

How it works: Smart contracts automate approvals, collateralization happens via NFT diplomas (kidding... unless?), and repayments settle in stablecoins. The kicker? Interest rates adjust dynamically based on your GitHub commit history—because nothing says 'trustless' like judging someone's coding stamina.

Wall Street's response? Probably another overpriced conference panel about 'the future of fintech' while their legacy systems creak louder than a freshman's dorm bed.

Game-changer or crypto pipe dream? The quad will decide.

Pencil Finance Launches On-Chain Capital for Student Loans

Pencil Finance has made a groundbreaking MOVE by issuing the first-ever on-chain capital for student loans. This initiative, announced on July 10, 2025, is set to transform the educational financing landscape by leveraging blockchain technology to provide transparent and efficient funding solutions. According to Animoca Brands, the platform has successfully deployed an inaugural loan bundle of $1 million, unlocking new opportunities for students in the Philippines and Indonesia.

Revolutionizing Educational Financing

Pencil Finance's innovative approach involves a student loan real-world-asset (RWA) protocol, co-incubated by Animoca Brands and HackQuest. This protocol allows eligible users to provide liquidity to loan pools, choosing between fixed or variable returns. The initiative demonstrates how decentralized finance (DeFi) solutions can expand access to education by originating student loan capital entirely on-chain.

Partnerships and Allocations

The successful deployment of Pencil Finance’s on-chain capital relies on strategic partnerships. ErudiFi, an education financing provider, received a significant portion of the loan capital, enabling it to offer student loans across key markets. Another beneficiary, the Transcend Network, supports education business founders globally. The loan bundle was divided into a Senior Tranche with a fixed 15% annual percentage yield (APY) and a Junior Tranche with variable APY, reflecting different risk profiles.

Blockchain's Role in Education

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, highlighted the historic nature of this development, stating, "This is an example of how blockchain can make a real, positive difference in people’s lives." Frank Li, co-founder of Pencil Finance, emphasized the social impact, noting that blockchain can drive meaningful changes by providing transparent funding solutions.

Operational Mechanics

Pencil Finance operates through a dual-tranche model, allowing users to choose between fixed or variable returns. Funds are issued to loan providers like ErudiFi, who convert them into local currency for student loans. These providers then pay tuition fees directly to universities, with students repaying their loans in manageable installments. This repayment structure not only facilitates access to education but also generates returns for participants who provide capital on the Pencil Finance platform.

Future Prospects

The launch of Pencil Finance's on-chain capital marks the beginning of a new era in educational financing. Cameron Wang, co-founder and COO of HackQuest, described the initiative as "history in the making," underscoring blockchain's potential to offer practical solutions for students and families. As Pencil Finance continues to tokenize the student loans market, it aims to increase access to education globally.
