Midnight’s Glacier Drop Goes Live – Ledger Users Left in the Cold Awaiting Fix

Crypto's latest midnight surprise drops like an avalanche—while Ledger's hardware wallet users scramble for shelter.

When glaciers move, you'd better have your gear ready. The crypto space just got another proof-of-stress test as the so-called 'Glacier Drop' hit at midnight, leaving Ledger users staring at frozen assets. No ice picks included.

Ledger's race against time

Support tickets are piling up faster than Bitcoin maximalists at an altcoin conference. The fix? Still 'in development'—because nothing screams 'security-first' like making customers watch helplessly during a token release.

Meanwhile, the drop itself rolled out smoother than a Wall Street banker's explanation for their third yacht. The irony? A project named after slow-moving ice just set new speed records for leaving hardware wallet users behind.

Finance's favorite circus continues: where else can 'scheduled maintenance' and 'emergency patch' mean the exact same thing?

Temporary Fix Coming for Ledger Users

Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of Cardano, acknowledged the issue on X. He explained that Ledger had been notified back in July but hasn’t provided a timeline for the needed update. Hence, developers are implementing a workaround using a method common in NFTs. This fix involves signing a null transaction with metadata, allowing Ledger users to claim their tokens.

For those curious about glacier drop support for ada on ledger devices, there is an issue with ledger's implementation of CIP-8 message signing. It apparently only supports signing messages up to 31 bytes whereas the GD payload is 251 bytes.

This is a cardano specific issue…

Besides, Hoskinson reassured users that the two-month window ensures no one will lose their chance. He advised affected users to return at the end of August, as there is no benefit in rushing.

Keystone Wallet Steps Up

Meanwhile, Keystone Wallet users in response to the CEO’s post reported a smooth claiming process via Eternl Wallet.

Notably, Cardano Stake Pool Operator Giovanni EASY1 also had something to say on the update. According to him, Keystone supports Ledger derivation paths. Therefore, users can restore their Ledger accounts on Keystone and claim tokens without issues.

Midnight’s Glacier Drop is a key example illustrating the excitement and complexity surrounding multi-chain launches. Since hardware wallet support is now a crucial user requirement, interoperability and developer coordination have become immediately necessary instead of optional concerns.
