Nvidia will launch a new AI chip for China in September, modified to meet US export rules

Nvidia plays the sanctions shuffle with a purpose-built AI chip for China—launching this September after strategic downgrades to slip past US export controls.

Silicon gymnastics: The modified H20 variant sacrifices just enough performance to comply while keeping China's AI ambitions (and Nvidia's revenue streams) alive. Because nothing fuels innovation like regulatory arbitrage.

Wall Street analysts already betting the farm on surreptitious crypto-mining adaptations—because when has the market ever needed an actual use case?

Huang to meet China’s premier and vice-premier in Beijing

While in the capital, Jensen plans to attend the International Supply Chain Expo starting Wednesday, where he’s also pushing for meetings with senior Chinese officials. He’s requesting talks with Premier Li Qiang, which WOULD be his highest-level meeting in China so far. He’s also trying to reconnect with Vice Premier He Lifeng, whom he spoke with in April during a previous visit. As of now, those meetings are still pending Beijing’s approval.

Jensen’s visit is a direct response to worsening geopolitical pressure. Speaking at the Computex conference in Taiwan in May, he called Trump’s restrictions on AI chip exports “a failure” and claimed that these policies were only speeding up China’s efforts to develop homegrown AI technology. He also said Nvidia’s market share in China had dropped from 95% to 50% in four years.

Despite those numbers, the company still sees major opportunity in China, which it estimates could become a $50 billion AI market. The company is trying to maintain a foothold in the country, which currently accounts for $17.1 billion in annual revenue, or 13% of its total global sales. That’s why Jensen is now playing diplomat as well as executive.

China clients test new chip while Nvidia waits on Washington

Sales for the redesigned chip won’t begin before September. Nvidia is still waiting for final clearance from the Trump administration to make sure it doesn’t break any new laws once it hits the market. The final specs might still change depending on how those talks go.

In the meantime, Chinese companies have been testing sample units. Two people with direct knowledge of those trials said the early feedback has been positive, and clients are planning to place large orders.

Even though the chip doesn’t compete with top-performing models from Chinese rivals, clients are staying loyal to Nvidia to avoid the cost of switching to new software platforms. Transitioning away from CUDA, Nvidia’s proprietary system, would make operations more expensive for companies already DEEP in that ecosystem.

Still, the demand is expected to be lower than it was for the H20, which was effectively banned earlier this year. Tech giants like Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent have already started testing domestic alternatives, wary of the growing risks that come with depending on a US-based chipmaker in this climate.

To deliver this new chip at scale, Nvidia will have to stockpile massive inventories in advance. That adds serious financial exposure if TRUMP tightens restrictions again. The company is clearly trying to avoid another multibillion-dollar loss.

When asked to comment, an Nvidia spokesperson didn’t confirm the redesigned chip but gave a statement on the broader market: “China has one of the largest populations of developers in the world, creating open-source foundation models and non-military applications used globally. While security is paramount, every one of those applications should run best on the US AI stack.”
