Block Bets Big on Bitcoin: Square to Roll Out BTC Payments by 2026
Jack Dorsey’s fintech empire just doubled down on crypto—Square merchants will soon bypass fiat rails entirely.
No more ’enabling’ or half-measures: Block’s 2026 deadline forces the hand of laggard competitors. Finally, a corporate Bitcoin play that doesn’t reek of PR desperation.
Wall Street analysts predict a 20% uptick in merchant adoption…right after they finish shorting BTC mining stocks.

Jack Dorsey’s company, Block, Inc., plans to let Square merchants accept Bitcoin payments using the Lightning Network. Announced at the Bitcoin 2025 conference, the rollout will start in late 2025 and expand to all eligible sellers by 2026, pending regulatory approval. Merchants can choose to keep the Bitcoin or automatically convert it to cash instantly. This move aims to make Bitcoin payments faster and cheaper using Square’s existing hardware.
