Silk Road’s Ross Ulbricht gets $31 mln in Bitcoin – But the source raises questions

Freed after a decade behind bars, the dark web’s most infamous entrepreneur just got a $31 million Bitcoin windfall. Cue the skeptics.

The Crypto Mystery No One’s Solving

Ulbricht’s wallet lit up with the equivalent of 1,000 BTC—enough to make even Wall Street’s bonus babies blush. Yet the source? As opaque as a Monero transaction.

‘Donations’ or Dark Market Revival?

True believers call it crowdfunded justice. Cynics whisper about unrecovered Silk Road stash—or worse, a fresh play from the crypto underworld. Either way, the IRS just perked up.

One thing’s certain: in crypto, even felons get second acts. Just ask the VC firms now scrambling to hire ex-FTX engineers.

Ross Ulbricht and the mysterious Bitcoin donation

According to a report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis shared with WIRED, the 300 BTC contribution made earlier this month can be traced back to Alphabay, a notorious marketplace that operated between 2014 and 2017.

Chainalysis also suggested the funds may have come from a major AlphaBay vendor with substantial crypto holdings.

Remarking on the same, Chainalysis director of investigations Phil Larratt said,

“We have reasonable grounds to suspect that these r originated in AlphaBay. Looking at the amount, that WOULD suggest they came from someone who was possibly a vendor on AlphaBay back in the early days.”

Before Chainalysis linked the $31 million bitcoin donation to AlphaBay, independent crypto investigator ZachXBT shared his own analysis on X, revealing that the funds likely did not originate from Silk Road.

Although the donor employed several Bitcoin mixers to hide the trail, ZachXBT tracked the funds to a wallet previously identified by Chainalysis’ Reactor tool as linked to suspicious activity.

He described the donation as “legitimate but not legitimate funds.”

ZachXBT uncovers the mystery

Additionally, ZachXBT found out that the individual behind the wallet cashed out cryptocurrency in small, scattered amounts at an exchange, likely an effort to avoid detection or seizure.

ZachXBT explained to WIRED that the use of multiple mixers and spreading deposits across centralized exchanges (CEX) is a common tactic to prevent illicit funds from being frozen.

The exact motive behind the $31 million Bitcoin donation to Ross Ulbricht remains uncertain.

Ulbricht, who was pardoned in January after serving 12 years of a double life sentence for charges including money laundering and narcotics trafficking, has sparked varied speculation.

Some on social media view the donation as a repayment or show of support from another dark web participant.

Meanwhile, MetaMask crypto security expert Taylor Monahan suggested that it could be a tribute to Ulbricht’s efforts in promoting anonymous online commerce.

Monahan stated,

“People donate when they’re deeply inspired by someone and/or grateful and/or have some sort of remorse for the situation. Survivor’s guilt is wild.”

What’s more?

During Ross Ulbricht’s trial, federal prosecutors claimed that Silk Road enabled over $200 million in drug transactions through its dark web marketplace.

Ulbricht was also alleged to have orchestrated six murder-for-hire schemes, one reportedly targeting a former Silk Road staff member.

However, it was later acknowledged that none of these alleged killings were ever verified, leaving the more sensational accusations unproven.

Signing Ulbricht’s pardon, Donald TRUMP put it best when he said,

“The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponisation of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!”
