What holds an object in orbit?
Could you please explain in layman's terms what exactly holds an object in orbit? I understand that it has something to do with the gravitational pull of a larger body, like a planet or a star, but I'm not entirely clear on the mechanics of it. Does the object need to be traveling at a certain speed to maintain its orbit? And how does the shape of the orbit relate to these factors?
