The 5 yen coin was first minted in Japan in 1948, during the Showa 23 year. Initially, the coin was without a hole, had a diameter of 22mm, and was made of brass. However, to distinguish it from the 1 yen coin, which was similar in size and material, a hole was added to the 5 yen coin in the following year.
