Fed's Collins Backs Holding Rates, Warns of Quick Hike If Inflation Stalls

Odaily News: Federal Reserve's Collins said she currently supports keeping interest rates unchanged, but this stance depends on seeing more progress in inflation cooling gradually toward the Fed's 2% target. Collins wrote: "To maintain the current target range for the federal funds rate, we need to continue seeing evidence that inflation is indeed declining. If evidence of sustained disinflation does not materialize, I think we should tighten monetary policy sooner rather than later."

She said recent inflation data showing moderate underlying price pressures is "somewhat encouraging," but added that monthly data can be volatile. "Whether the recent improvement can be sustained remains to be seen." Collins said tight interest rates combined with higher long-term yields should help ease some of the inflationary pressures from strong spending by households and businesses. She added that the impact of previous tariffs is expected to have largely faded, and the effect of rising oil prices on inflation should also begin to diminish. (Jin10)

World Liberty Financial CEO: Never Discussed Business With Trump

Odaily News: Zach Witkoff, CEO of Trump family-linked crypto project World Liberty Financial (WLF), said the market performance and actual usage of the USD1 stablecoin prove the project does not have the conflict-of-interest issues questioned by outsiders.

In an interview with CNBC, Zach Witkoff said USD1's circulating supply has exceeded $4 billion, with over $1 billion in trading volume in the past 24 hours. "Actual user usage and liquidity prove the real demand for USD1." Responding to concerns that World Liberty Financial may channel funds to Trump and his family through USD1, Zach Witkoff said such worries are exaggerated, and stressed that he has never and will never discuss business matters with President Trump, and is currently focused on enhancing the actual value of WLF products for users. Stablecoins are becoming the internet-native payment layer, "the dollar should also flow around the clock," and he believes USD1 will play an important role in the development of digital financial infrastructure. Meanwhile, World Liberty Financial still faces ongoing questions from some U.S. politicians about its overseas investments, political connections, and business interest arrangements. (CNBC)

Analysis: Waller may release dovish signals at Jackson Hole, with US debt policy coordination becoming the market focus

The market is closely watching Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Walsh's speech at the Jackson Hole annual meeting this Friday. As U.S. long-term Treasury yields continue to rise, the market generally expects Walsh to possibly release dovish signals to alleviate concerns about inflation and fiscal risks in the bond market.Mark Cabana, head of U.S. interest rate strategy at Bank of America, stated that the market has gradually lost sensitivity to Walsh's previous verbal statements about "fighting inflation," and investors currently hope to see a substantive policy path to address inflation. Meanwhile, Treasury Secretary Basant has recently increased the repurchase of long-term U.S. Treasuries and financed the government through the issuance of short-term bonds, indicating some divergence between the Treasury and the Federal Reserve in managing the bond market. The article points out that Basant's shift of financing pressure to the short end effectively bets U.S. fiscal costs on future interest rate declines. If Walsh can promote interest rate cuts by controlling inflation and boosting productivity, the short-term financing model is expected to reduce government interest expenses; however, if long-term rates remain high, U.S. fiscal pressure may further intensify. The market also anticipates that the Federal Reserve may make adjustments to liquidity management and balance sheet policies. Michael Cloherty, head of U.S. interest rate strategy at CIBC, believes that quantitative tightening could begin as early as the end of 2027, provided that regulatory rule changes can reduce banks' demand for reserves.Currently, the Federal Reserve still holds about $1.6 trillion in long-term U.S. Treasuries. Walsh's statements at Jackson Hole regarding long-term yields, inflation, and the path of balance sheet reduction may become an important signal for assessing the degree of future policy coordination between the Federal Reserve and the Treasury.
