The most obvious difference between the two is privacy.
Bitcoin's ledger is public by default; anyone can view balances and fund flows of on-chain addresses. Zcash supports both transparent and shielded addresses. Users can transact publicly like Bitcoin, or move ZEC into the shielded pool to hide information such as sender, receiver, and amount.
This functionality relies on zero-knowledge proofs, which prove that a statement or transaction complies with rules without revealing specific information. Zcash was one of the first blockchain projects to put zero-knowledge proofs into practical use. Although its product experience and infrastructure have long been lacking, privacy features are gradually becoming easier to use as wallets and user interfaces improve.

Why I Believe the Crypto Market Is Still in the Early Stages of a Bull Market
Before discussing ZEC, we first need to assess where the overall crypto market stands. I believe the market may be entering the early stages of a new bull market, for two main reasons.
First, the currency debasement trade is returning to investors' radar.
As the market refocuses on fiscal expansion, long-term interest rates, and fiat purchasing power, both gold and Bitcoin have rebounded significantly from lows. More importantly, investors' understanding of Bitcoin is shifting. Five years ago, much capital still viewed Bitcoin as a high-leverage Nasdaq proxy or a purely speculative tool; today, more traditional capital is placing it within the framework of currency debasement and store-of-value assets.
This capital comes from outside the crypto market and could provide a new source of demand for Bitcoin. Even if Bitcoin does not rise quickly in the short term, its price may be supported as long as external capital continues to allocate.
Second, crypto-native investors may be overly pessimistic.
Market sentiment typically reaches extremes at tops and bottoms. Last year's fourth-quarter rally was seen as almost certain, and investors positioned early, leaving the market without new marginal buyers. Once a price decline catalyst appeared, participants who were fully positioned waiting for gains became sellers instead.
The current situation may be the opposite. Many people hold large amounts of cash, waiting for further market declines, and any bullish view is seen as a dangerous top signal. This suggests market positioning may have shifted significantly toward defense. Once the market warms up and sidelined capital re-enters, the previous pessimistic consensus could be broken.
However, a new rally may not benefit all tokens. Crypto assets are showing a "K-shaped divergence": on one end are store-of-value assets like Bitcoin and ZEC, as well as projects that can generate revenue and return value to holders through buybacks; on the other end are projects lacking real demand and continuously facing token unlocks and selling pressure.
In recent months, Bitcoin has been relatively flat, but a few assets like HYPE, LIT, and ZEC have clearly outperformed. This looks more like an internal capital reallocation: investors are selling underperforming tokens from the previous cycle and reallocating capital to assets with store-of-value properties, cash flow, or clear narratives.
Why ZEC Could Be the "Fast Horse" of This Cycle
Zcash has been running for nearly a decade, yet it underperformed for most of that time. Over the past nine years, it not only failed to live up to early market expectations but also lagged Bitcoin and mainstream crypto assets for a long period. Now that the price has suddenly broken out of its long-term range, with market attention and trading momentum rising together, I do not think this change should be dismissed as short-term speculation.
An important indicator for judging Zcash's fundamentals is the amount of ZEC in the shielded pool.
The shielded pool can be understood as the capital pool for Zcash privacy transactions. The more users and assets enter it, the lower the proportion of any single transaction in the entire pool, making transactions harder to identify. Over the past two years, the amount of ZEC entering the shielded pool has gradually recovered, at least indicating that more assets are using Zcash's privacy features.
Of course, an increase in shielded pool balance does not directly prove growth in real user numbers. Because transactions are private, outsiders cannot determine how many users these assets come from or their specific purposes. But compared with years of near stagnation, this change is still noteworthy.
More importantly, Zcash's fundamentals may depend on both the number of ZEC in the shielded pool and the dollar value of those ZEC.
If the total value of the shielded pool is only $1 million, a user wanting to move $10 million would become the most conspicuous participant in the pool, making it difficult to obtain effective privacy protection. But if the pool holds $10 billion, the same amount of capital would be only a small fraction, and the privacy set would be significantly larger.
This creates a reflexive mechanism: as ZEC's price rises, the dollar value carried by the shielded pool increases; a larger capital pool improves the usability of the privacy product for large users; increased usage may strengthen Zcash's network effect and store-of-value narrative, attracting more capital.
Here, "reflexivity" means that price changes affect investors' perception of an asset and even alter the asset's usage conditions; improved fundamentals in turn push the price higher. For store-of-value assets that rely on consensus and network effects, this loop is especially pronounced.
Unlike exchange tokens, ZEC does not generate cash flow that can be used for valuation. For assets like HYPE or LIT, once prices rise to a certain level, the valuation attractiveness of revenue and buybacks may decline; but the potential market for a store-of-value asset depends on how much wealth investors are willing to allocate, and the theoretical ceiling is much higher.
At the time of recording, ZEC was priced around $850, with a market cap roughly 1% of Bitcoin's. My optimistic scenario is that if Zcash gradually becomes viewed as the second crypto store-of-value asset beyond Bitcoin, its market cap could reach 5% to 15% of Bitcoin's in the future.
Assuming Bitcoin's price itself doubles while the market cap gap between ZEC and BTC narrows, ZEC's dollar price could benefit from both Bitcoin's rise and relative valuation improvement. This is also the source of the asymmetric risk-reward I see.
This is only a scenario exercise, not a definite price prediction. Zcash's current store-of-value consensus, liquidity, and institutional holdings are far below Bitcoin's. Whether it can truly be repriced depends on whether privacy adoption, technical reliability, and new capital continue to improve.
On Aug. 25, Grayscale's Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH, providing traditional investors with a new channel to gain exposure to ZEC's spot price. However, this product is not a traditional fund registered under the U.S. Investment Company Act of 1940, and its regulatory protections and risk structure differ from conventional ETFs.
The significance of the ETF is to lower the allocation barrier, but the listing itself does not mean institutional demand has formed. What truly needs to be observed is subsequent net subscriptions, holdings size, and trading activity. If traditional capital begins to flow in steadily while shielded pool assets continue to grow, Zcash's reflexive logic will be further supported.
From Stop-Loss at the Low to Buyback at the High: How a Security Incident Changed My Judgment
My trading experience with Zcash has not been smooth.
From April to May this year, I began buying ZEC below $400 and kept adding as the price rose. At the time, I believed ZEC could break out of its long-term range in the second quarter.
Then researchers disclosed a potential integrity vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool. Under certain conditions, an attacker could theoretically forge shielded assets, threatening the credibility of ZEC's supply. Public information did not prove the vulnerability was actually exploited, but for a store-of-value asset that relies on scarcity and trust, the mere possibility of hidden inflation was enough to shake market confidence.
After the news broke, ZEC fell more than 60% at one point. I worried the incident would permanently damage Zcash's integrity as a store-of-value asset, so I liquidated my spot position, selling some ZEC even below $300.
It was a very painful loss. If this had happened three or four years ago, I might have removed Zcash from my watchlist and never considered buying back. But after closing the position, I set a condition for myself: if ZEC could return to the pre-event price range, I would reassess and buy back.
Later, ZEC did recover its losses. I eventually re-established a position at a higher price than where I sold.
This looks like a typical sell-low-buy-high, but my judgment is that the price recovery shows the market did not completely abandon Zcash. The vulnerability and panic could have destroyed its store-of-value consensus; if Zcash could still recover after fixing the issue, it would instead demonstrate a certain "antifragility."
This is similar to the multiple crises Bitcoin faced in its early days. Bitcoin endured exchange collapses, hacks, and regulatory crackdowns, yet continued to operate after each shock. The longer a system survives and the more stress it withstands, the stronger the market's trust in its viability may become.
But a price recovery does not mean all technical risks have disappeared. It only shows that the market is willing to take on risk again; it cannot prove that no other unknown vulnerabilities exist in the protocol. For Zcash, what needs to be observed next is whether the fix can operate stably over the long term and whether the market can continue to trust its supply integrity.
Adding to Winners: How to Bet on a High-Conviction Trade
This experience made me rethink how investors should handle losing and winning positions.
Many people keep averaging down after prices fall because they are unwilling to admit their judgment may be wrong; once prices rise, they rush to take profits. The result is that winners in the portfolio are sold too early while losing assets accumulate.
My approach is the opposite: first establish an investment thesis and allocate an initial position; then gradually increase exposure as price, fundamentals, and market momentum begin to validate the judgment. If the original logic fails, accept the loss and exit.
Suppose an investor judged at $1,000 that Bitcoin would rise to $10,000 and built a small position. When the price reaches $2,000, as long as the original logic is unchanged, the rally actually increases the probability that Bitcoin will continue toward the target. In this case, the market is validating the judgment, not just making the asset "more expensive."
This is also why I continued to add after buying back ZEC. I hold spot and also use some leverage, with a stop-loss set for the position. Currently, this trade accounts for most of my net worth because I believe ZEC is my highest-conviction opportunity.
This does not mean others should replicate this position. Concentrated holdings and leverage can quickly amplify judgment errors, and high conviction does not equal high win rate. If the so-called "market validation" consists only of price increases without evidence of adoption, capital inflows, and protocol progress, it can easily become self-justification for chasing.
For me, the ZEC thesis requires several conditions: the amount of ZEC in the shielded pool continues to grow; the ETF brings stable new capital; ZEC remains strong relative to BTC; protocol upgrades maintain market trust in supply integrity; and privacy and quantum security become topics of concern for more investors.
Conversely, if privacy adoption stalls, ETF capital does not continue to flow in, technical risks again damage trust, or ZEC falls back into its original range after a long-term breakout, this thesis needs to be re-examined.
Risk in the market cannot be eliminated, only redistributed across different assets and time frames. The real question is not how to find a risk-free trade, but which risks are worth taking and whether you can exit in time when your judgment is wrong.
The reason I view ZEC as a hard-to-replicate opportunity is that it has gone through nearly a decade of issuance, underperformance, and market neglect, and now price, adoption, product channels, and the privacy narrative are changing simultaneously. This history is difficult to reproduce in a newly issued VC token or meme coin.
Ultimately, what I am betting on is not just that ZEC will continue to rise, but that price, privacy adoption, institutional entry, and store-of-value consensus can form a self-reinforcing loop. Whether this loop can persist still needs to be validated by subsequent data and market performance. But when a high-conviction judgment begins to be validated, I want to have the courage to commit a position large enough to matter, while also retaining the ability to exit when the logic fails.
