Silicon Valley heavyweight David Sacks just threw cold water on China''s AI hype train—claiming the tech superpower lags behind the U.S. by at least a quarter. No sugarcoating, just hard numbers.

While Beijing pours billions into catching up, Sacks'' timeline suggests American chip bans and talent wars are biting harder than expected. But hey—at least their surveillance algorithms still crush it.

Funny how ''national security concerns'' vanish when there''s a 20% ROI on AI-powered social credit scores.

“China is not years and years behind us in AI. Maybe they’re 3-6 months,” said Sacks at the Amazon (AMZN) AWS summit in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. “It’s a very close race.” Sacks also warned that over-regulation of AI could derail American innovation in the field.

U.S. and China Battle for AI Dominance

China shocked the world in January following the release of DeepSeek’s AI model. Since then, the U.S. has placed additional restrictions on semiconductor exports, such as Nvidia’s (NVDA) chips, in an attempt to remain the global leader in AI. Last month, the TRUMP administration ordered semiconductor design software companies, such as Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) and Synopsys (SNPS), to halt sales to China.

Despite the restrictions, NVDA stock has jumped by 31% during the past three months as demand for its chips remains elevated.
