Former Fed Chairs Join Forces to Challenge Trump’s Firing of Lisa Cook

Former Federal Reserve chairs break ranks in rare bipartisan move—forming a united front against the controversial termination of economist Lisa Cook.

The Backlash Builds

Multiple Fed predecessors—normally discreet after leaving office—are coordinating public statements and behind-the-scenes pressure campaigns. They're leveraging decades of institutional credibility to challenge what they call a 'dangerous precedent' for central bank independence.

Institutional Integrity at Stake

Sources confirm the coalition includes both Democratic and Republican appointees—a remarkable alignment in today's polarized climate. Their argument hinges not on political allegiance but on procedural safeguards meant to insulate monetary policy from partisan interference.

Washington's Whisper Network

The former chairs are activating their networks across academia, finance, and government—flooding media channels with op-eds and briefing congressional staffers. It's a masterclass in establishment pushback, the kind usually reserved for existential threats to financial stability.

Because nothing unites former rivals like protecting their legacy—and the printing presses that sustain it.

“Allowing the government to remove a member of the Board of Governors for the first time in the Nation’s history, while under the cloud of legal challenge, will erode public confidence in the Fed’s independence and threaten the long-term stability of our economy,” read the brief.

Firing Cook Risks Fed Credibility, Warns Former Top Economic Leaders

The brief also notes that allowing TRUMP to fire Cook would threaten the “credibility and efficacy of U.S. monetary policy” and provides an example of political interference in Turkey that led to significant inflation.

Last month, President Trump attempted to fire Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud that were first brought to light by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte. Cook responded with a lawsuit to keep her position, arguing that Trump had no legal grounds to remove her.
