Trade winds are shifting—or at least that's what the White House wants you to believe.
Dealmaking or Distraction?
The administration claims it's negotiating at breakneck speed, though skeptics whisper it's just another episode of 'Art of the Deal: The Reality Show.' Wall Street yawns—used to the theatrics by now—while Main Street wonders if these 'deals' will outlast a tweetstorm.
Cynical Finance Jab:
Meanwhile, crypto traders shrug and keep stacking SATs—because unlike trade policies, Bitcoin's supply cap doesn't change after a midnight Twitter rant.
Key Takeaways
- President Donald Trump said in a social media post that he would be meeting with the South Korean delegation Wednesday, part of a “busy” day of trade negotiations.
- While South Korea faces a 25% tariff ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, Trump said that South Korea would make an offer to “buy down” its tariffs.
- The U.S. also struck a trade deal with Pakistan that would develop the country's oil reserves, Trump said.
According to President Donald Trump, the WHITE House was busy working on trade deals Wednesday before this week's self-imposed tariff deadline.
Higher tariffs are set to go into effect on Aug. 1, and roughly two dozen countries could still negotiate with the administration to try to strike a better trade deal.
“I have spoken to the Leaders of many Countries, all of whom want to make the United States ‘extremely happy,’” TRUMP said in a post on social media.
South Korea
In his post, Trump said he WOULD meet with the South Korean trade delegation Wednesday afternoon. South Korea faces a 25% tariff if a deal isn't struck before the end of the week. Trump said negotiators from that country have made an offer to “buy down” those tariffs.
“I will be interested in hearing what that offer is,” Trump said.
The U.S. imported $131.5 billion in 2024, according to the Office of the Trade Representative. That's up 13.3% from the year prior and makes for a trade deficit of $66 billion.
Pakistan
Trump also said that the U.S. has reached a trade deal with Pakistan.
While he didn't provide many details of the deal, Trump did say that it focuses on oil.
“Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership,” Trump wrote in his post.
The U.S. imported $5.1 billion in goods from Pakistan in 2024 and had a $3 billion trade deficit with the country, according to the Trade Representative's office.
The deal with Pakistan would be the seventh one made since he began threatening higher tariffs on countries with imbalanced trade relationships with the U.S.
Trump said additional countries have also been negotiating trade deals but didn’t name those trading partners. In addition to working with South Korea and Pakistan on Wednesday, the White House detailed its 50% tariff on copper imports and a separate 50% tariff on goods from Brazil.
