Theta & AWS Team Up to Power Yonsei University with Cutting-Edge Amazon AI Chips
Tech giants collide as Theta Network partners with AWS to deploy Amazon's next-gen AI chips at South Korea's prestigious Yonsei University.
The move signals a major leap in academic AI infrastructure—while Wall Street analysts wonder if this is just another 'blockchain solution' searching for a problem.
These chips promise to turbocharge machine learning research, though skeptics note the university's crypto lab might benefit more than the computer science department.
One thing's certain: when cloud computing meets blockchain, the hype machine shifts into overdrive—whether the applications justify the buzz remains to be seen.
Yonsei’s Pioneering AI Research with AWS Trainium
Professor Dongha Lee’s team is using AWS Trainium on THETA EdgeCloud to build a new framework for training conversational recommendation agents. These AI agents are designed to simulate human-like interactions, including personalized conversations and evolving preferences.
Instead of relying on human evaluators, the lab uses AI-simulated users with memory, personality traits, and dynamic preferences to assess the models in real-time.
Theta and @awscloud recently joined forces to launch Amazon AI chips Trainium & Inferentia on EdgeCloud, and now we’re proud to share that Yonsei University's Data & Language Intelligence Lab will be the 1st customer to use AWS Trainium on EdgeCloud!https://t.co/HgQ8frHab6 pic.twitter.com/lzPxnE2yjh

The system utilizes Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) for model training, allowing the agents to refine their responses without manual labeling. This approach leads to faster iterations and more accurate AI models. The ability to simulate millions of user interactions daily is expected to significantly speed up the research process, allowing the team to evaluate and improve their models instantly.
Cost Efficiency and Scalability with AWS Trainium
The partnership between Theta Network and AWS offers a cost-effective solution for AI research. AWS Trainium instances are purpose-built for deep learning tasks, providing up to 50% cost savings compared to traditional solutions.
Subsequently, this allows institutions like Yonsei University to experiment with large models and vast datasets without the heavy financial burden typically associated with high-performance computing.
Through the use of AWS Trainium on Theta EdgeCloud, Yonsei can now perform training and evaluation tasks at scale. The integration of Trainium and Theta EdgeCloud’s global network of over 30,000 Nvidia GPUs enables researchers to choose the most appropriate computing resources for their workload. This flexibility is essential for supporting the next generation of conversational AI and recommendation systems.
A New Era of AI Research Powered by Decentralized Infrastructure
Theta Network’s EdgeCloud platform is a decentralized cloud infrastructure that supports AI and media workloads. By integrating AWS’s cutting-edge Trainium and Inferentia chips, Theta provides an advanced solution for large-scale AI training.
This decentralized infrastructure allows for unprecedented scalability, making it easier for academic institutions like Yonsei to run complex AI models efficiently.
“Mitch Liu, CEO of Theta Labs, said, “Yonsei University’s use of AWS Trainium on EdgeCloud hybrid exemplifies how decentralized infrastructure and advanced AI hardware can accelerate research. With this partnership, we’re setting a new standard for AI research and development in academia.”
