Former US President Trump just threw geopolitical gasoline on the markets—claims Russia’s angling for a massive trade agreement. Cue the algorithmic traders front-running the headlines.
Trade wars? More like trade opportunities—at least for the hedge funds shorting volatility. Because nothing says ’stable markets’ like a surprise US-Russia economic pact.

Trump says that he and Putin discussed multiple topics, primarily a ceasefire deal between the latter and Ukraine. “Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” the US president wrote. “The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else WOULD be aware of. The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent.”
Following his claim about the ceasefire, Trump also wrote that Putin is looking to establish a trade deal with the United States. “Russia wants to do largescale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic “bloodbath” is over, and I agree. There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED.” Trump also said that Ukraine could be a beneficiary from a potential trade deal with the US as well. He even went on to add that the Vatican, as represented by the new Pope, would be open to hosting the trade/ceasefire negotiations.
Recent cooperative measures between Putin and Trump that include the US president receiving a painting from the Russian leader have produced questions regarding how such a US-Russia axis could affect trade dynamics between the two. Both countries have been in active communications since Trump’s official return to office in January. A new trade deal between the US and Russia would be a big development considering current global tensions.
