âIn DC,⊠seizing the 90-day window for a mutual solution to unjustified tariffs,â Sefcovic wrote on X after meeting U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He added that the EU âremains constructive and ready for a fair deal â including reciprocity through our 0-for-0 tariff offer on industrial goods and the work on non-tariff barriers.â
âAchieving this will require a significant joint effort on both sides.
-EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic
The meeting comes just hours after US President Donald Trump said the EU must come forward to negotiate a new trade deal. The United States and the EU have been at opposing ends for the last several weeks as tariffs have been traded back and forth. Both the EU and the US have paused their tariffs against each other, and this is the first instance of a new deal being discussed.
The global economy faced unexpected headwinds this month when the United States announced a sweeping economic policy that affected nearly every country on the planet. Indeed, the Trump administration issued a global tariff as it sought to bring these nations back to the negotiating table. In response, a host of nations responded with their own set of retaliatory tariffs. In response to the plan, the EU agreed to issue its own 25% tariff on the US. However, following Trumpâs freeze, the collective union ended up doing the same.
Discussions are active, but a trade deal between the US and EU has yet to be struck.
