Crypto pioneer shifts focus from digital wealth to biological immortality

THE LONGEVITY GAMBLE

Arthur Hayes, the maverick behind BitMEX, just placed his most ambitious bet yet—not on bitcoin's next rally, but on cheating death itself. The serial disruptor is pouring capital into cutting-edge longevity research, targeting age-related diseases with the same aggressive approach that built his crypto empire.

WHY TECH BILLIONAIRES WANT TO LIVE FOREVER

Hayes joins a growing cohort of Silicon Valley elites funding life extension technologies. Unlike traditional venture investments that promise 10x returns, this play aims for infinite returns—on lifespan. The move signals a broader trend of crypto wealth flowing into radical science projects that mainstream finance considers pure science fiction.

THE CYNICAL TAKE

Because what's the point of accumulating digital fortunes if you're not around to enjoy them? Wall Street might call it vanity investing, but in crypto circles, it's just another asymmetric bet—with the ultimate payoff being not having to meet your maker while your cold wallet stays warm.

Hayes Path of Legal Battle

His new focus to live long follows years of legal troubles. Hayes, along with BitMEX co-founders Benjamin Delo and Samuel Reed, were charged in 2020 for violating the Bank Secrecy Act.

They pleaded guilty to the crime in 2022 and paid $10 million each. They were later sentenced to probation. However, in March, the president pardoned them and wiped their records clean

Hayes has said the pardon did not really change his lifestyle. Before that, he was already living in Singapore and spending time skiing in Japan.

His essays, which are often mixing ideas on markets, memes, and money, are still widely read. In fact, one of his writings, titled “Dust on Crust,” inspired the creation of Ethena’s synthetic dollar, which now has a market value of more than $11 billion.

More Crypto Leaders Are Turning to Longevity Research

Now, Hayes is spending money on both digital assets and new ventures outside of crypto. But he is not alone. The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin has also donated millions to life-extension research, while Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong co-founded a biotech company called NewLimit that raised $130 million this year.

Hayes’s family office, Maelstrom, has also invested in digital asset treasury companies, though his partner has warned that his excitement in this area might go too far.
