Elon Musk announces that Grok will be coming to Tesla cars

Elon Musk just dropped a bombshell: Tesla's fleet is getting Grok. The AI assistant—Musk's answer to ChatGPT—will soon be rolling out to vehicles globally, turning every Tesla into a sarcasm-laden, meme-ready co-pilot.

Grok meets gearheads

No release date yet, but expect over-the-air updates to start hitting select models within months. Musk teased 'next-level conversational UI'—think real-time navigation tweaks via voice command, or troubleshooting your charging session with an AI that roasts you for forgetting to plug in.

The crypto angle? Zero—unless you count Tesla's $1.5B bitcoin stash gathering dust while Musk plays with shiny AI toys. Priorities.

One thing's certain: When Grok goes live, Tesla's cabin experience just got way more interesting. Whether that translates to actual utility—or just another distraction for drivers—remains to be seen.

Users’ expectations of Grok amidst internal strife

The news that Grok would be coming to Tesla vehicles soon comes several hours after xAI debuted the latest flagship AI model, Grok 4. The latest AI model from xAI will be stacked up against OpenAI’s forthcoming AI model, GPT-5, which is expected to launch later this summer.

Fans had wondered loudly why Musk spent an hour late on Wednesday talking about Grok without mentioning a Tesla integration, which likely prompted the billionaire’s early morning announcement. However, Musk is known for making Tesla-related announcements on X, often before he tells his engineers.

Meanwhile, it has been a tumultuous week for Elon Musk’s companies. Earlier on Wednesday, Linda Yaccarino stepped down from her role as the CEO of X after roughly two years with the company.

“When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company,” Yaccarino wrote. “I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.”

Elon Musk replied, “Thank you for your contributions,” and has not made any other comment about the future of the CEO role at X.

Grok’s competitiveness amidst its shortcomings

Recently Grok has become more prone to misbehavior like making anti-semitic comments, slating the Democrats, and even rape threats. It has already gone on several clearly antisemitic rants, in which he criticizes “Jewish executives” in Hollywood and says that Jews are often “spewing anti-white hate.”

This is nothing new for Grok – Grok spread lies about “white genocide” in South Africa in May. These lies came up even when replying to posts that had nothing to do with the subject.

In response, Musk said that this was because of an unauthorized modification. After a few days, Grok said that it didn’t believe the widely accepted fact that about 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. It pointed out that numbers can be manipulated for political narratives.

As a result, X temporarily took down Grok on Wednesday to attempt to solve the problem. Grok account said,  “xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”

This may prove difficult for xAI to MOVE past its recent mishaps as it tries to pitch Grok to businesses as a real contender to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Whether businesses are ready to adopt Grok, flaws and all, remains to be seen.
