Independent publishers are up in arms over Google’s AI Overviews, which generate article summaries that appear above traditional search results. These summaries—rolled out globally since May 2023—now include ads, effectively monetizing publishers’ content without compensation. The Independent Publishers Alliance argues this practice diverts traffic from original sources, starving sites of readers and ad revenue. Their June 30 filing reveals the Core grievance: publishers can’t block AI scraping without vanishing from regular search results too. It’s a classic “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” scenario.

Google insists its AI Overviews actually help publishers by driving “billions of daily clicks” to websites. A spokesperson told Reuters the feature lets users “ask more questions,” creating discovery opportunities.
