Why is the Joker dead in Arkham Knight?

I'm playing Batman: Arkham Knight and in one of the missions, I found the Joker apparently dead. I'm wondering why he's dead in the game. Is there a specific reason for his death? Did he sacrifice himself or was he killed by someone?
