Why is skydiving so expensive?

I've always been fascinated by skydiving, but when I looked into it, I was shocked by how expensive it is. I don't understand why it costs so much just to jump out of a plane. Is it because of the equipment? The training? Or is it just a way for companies to make a lot of money?
