Why was Portal 3 cancelled?

I heard that Portal 3, which was supposed to be the next big thing in the Portal series, got cancelled. I'm really curious about the reasons behind this decision. Was it due to financial issues, creative differences, or some other problem? I'd love to know the background of why Portal 3 didn't see the light of day.
