Why did Elijah throw his mantle on Elisha?

Elijah was a prophet in the Old Testament and he knew his time of death was approaching. Elisha was his devoted servant, who desired to inherit Elijah's prophetic mantle. Elijah threw his Mantle on Elisha as a symbol of passing on his spiritual authority.
