How do you get rid of deep dirt under your nails?

I've been working in the garden and now I have deep dirt under my nails. It's really hard to remove and looks quite unsightly. I've tried using a nail brush but it's not doing the job. Any tips on how to effectively get rid of this stubborn dirt?
