What is the derivative for dummies?

Can you explain in simple terms what a derivative is? I've heard the term before but it always sounds so complicated. Is it related to investing or finance? How does it work and why is it important? Can you give an example or two to help me understand better? I'm really trying to wrap my head around this concept but it's been quite confusing so far.
