Is it normal to pay a travel agent?

Isn't it customary to pay a travel agent for their services? I mean, they do all the hard work of planning your trip, finding the best deals, and making sure everything runs smoothly. So, isn't it fair to compensate them for their efforts? Or is there a different way to go about booking travel these days? I'm just curious about the standard practice in the industry.
