Will stores take torn money?

Excuse me, I have a question regarding the acceptance of damaged currency. I recently came across some torn money, and I'm wondering if stores are still obligated to accept it as legal tender. I understand that the condition of the bills may vary, but are there any general guidelines or policies in place that dictate whether or not stores must accept torn or mutilated money?
