Do Akitas shed a lot?

I've heard that Akitas can be quite a handful when it comes to shedding. Is it true that they shed a lot? If so, are there any particular seasons where shedding is worse than others? Are there any specific grooming techniques or products that can help manage the shedding? I'm considering getting an Akita but I want to make sure I'm prepared for the maintenance requirements.
