Can you turn into a mute?

Can you seriously tell me, is it physically possible for a human being to suddenly become mute? I mean, can someone just wake up one day and find that they've lost the ability to speak? I understand that there are medical conditions that can cause a person to lose their voice, but I'm talking about a complete inability to communicate verbally. Is there any scientific explanation for how this could happen, or is it just something that happens in movies and TV shows? I'm genuinely curious.
