Can setting spray replace primer?

I'm curious, can setting spray truly replace the role of primer in makeup application? Primer is often used as a base to help smooth out the skin, create an even surface, and enhance the longevity of makeup. But with setting spray becoming increasingly popular, I'm wondering if it can offer similar benefits. Does setting spray have the ability to fill in pores, create a smooth canvas, and keep makeup in place for extended periods, just like primer? Or is primer still a necessity for achieving a flawless, long-lasting makeup look?
