Is 50 too old to start cycling?

I'm curious to know, is 50 really too late in life to begin cycling? Many say age is just a number, but I'm hesitant to start a new hobby that might be physically demanding. Could someone who's experienced with cycling shed some light on whether this age barrier is just a myth, or if there are genuine concerns I should be aware of before strapping on a helmet and taking to the streets?
