Has there ever been a good prequel?

I'm curious, has there ever been a truly exceptional prequel that has managed to captivate audiences and live up to the hype and expectations that come with such a title? Many prequels have fallen short, either due to poor storytelling or a lack of innovation. So, I have to ask, has there been a prequel that has defied these odds and proven to be a masterpiece in its own right?
