Is EIN number the same as federal tax ID?

Excuse me, I'm a bit confused about something. I was wondering if the EIN number and the federal tax ID are the same thing? I've heard them being used interchangeably, but I just want to make sure that they are indeed the same for tax purposes and other official documentation. Could you please clarify this for me?
