Can you get paid for running a node?

So, I'm curious, can one actually earn money by running a node in the cryptocurrency ecosystem? I've heard of miners being rewarded for verifying transactions, but I'm not sure if the same applies to nodes. Is there a direct monetary incentive for running a node, or is it more of a community service that helps maintain the network? I'd love to know if it's possible to turn this into a profitable venture.
