How big are Akita Inu dogs?

I'm curious to know, how large do Akita Inu dogs typically grow? Are they known for being on the smaller or larger side of the dog spectrum? Are there any notable differences in size between male and female Akita Inus, or do they tend to be fairly uniform in their dimensions?
