Should you turn off your iPad when not using it?

Hey there, I've been wondering something about my iPad lately. When I'm not actively using it, should I really be turning it off? I mean, it's so convenient to just leave it on and pick up where I left off. But I've heard that leaving it on all the time can drain the battery faster and maybe even cause some performance issues. So, what's the deal? Should I be shutting down my iPad every time I'm not using it, or is it okay to just leave it in sleep mode?
