What kind of animal is the Kraken?

Could you please clarify for me the nature of the creature known as the Kraken? Is it a mythical beast, perhaps a sea monster of sorts? Or is there some basis in fact for its existence, perhaps as a deep-sea species not yet fully understood by modern science?
