What happens if I don't get off the waitlist?

Excuse me, I'm just curious, what exactly would happen if I were to remain on the waitlist and didn't get accepted into the program or opportunity? Would there be any other avenues for me to pursue, or is the waitlist the sole path to access? Also, would staying on the waitlist affect my chances in any future applications or opportunities with your organization? It would be great to have a clearer understanding of the implications.
