Can we say welcome instead of you're welcome?

I'm curious, can we substitute "welcome" for "you're welcome" in casual conversation? I've noticed some people using it as a response to thanks, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate or if it conveys the same level of politeness. Wouldn't it be more direct to simply say "you're welcome" when acknowledging someone's gratitude? Or does "welcome" carry a more casual, friendly tone that might be preferred in certain settings?
