Do I need an internet provider to use Gmail?

Excuse me, I have a question regarding the use of Gmail. I'm wondering if it's absolutely necessary to have an internet provider in order to access and utilize Gmail for my email needs. I understand that Gmail is an online service, but I'm just curious if there's any way around it, perhaps using some sort of alternative method that doesn't require an internet connection.
