Can you short sell crypto?

Can you really short sell cryptocurrency? I've heard that some exchanges allow it, but I'm not sure how it works or if it's even worth the risk. I mean, isn't the whole idea of crypto to buy low and sell high? So, how does short selling fit into that strategy? And what are the potential downsides? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matter.
