Why is 1 not a prime number?

Excuse me, could you clarify for me why the number 1 is not considered a prime number? I understand that prime numbers are defined as those greater than 1 that have no divisors other than 1 and themselves, but it seems to me that 1 only has 1 as a divisor, which would make it fit the criteria. What am I missing here? Why is 1 not a prime number?
