What is taught in ELA?

I'm curious to know, what exactly is taught in ELA, or English Language Arts? Does it just cover the basics of reading, writing, and grammar, or is there more to it? I've heard that it's more than just language skills, but also includes literature analysis, critical thinking, and even some aspects of creative writing.
